Jean Nouvel

Both provocateur and pragmatist, Jean Nouvel has spent more than five decades challenging convention with buildings that respond to their surroundings while refusing to blend quietly into them. His restless curiosity delights in delivering the unexpected, yet he has an uncanny ability to make innovation feel entirely of its place. As Nouvel himself put it, “The future of architecture is no longer architectural.” His philosophy sees buildings not as isolated edifices, but as expressions of the culture, landscape, and disciplines of their time. From the Arab World Institute and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris to Barcelona’s Torre Glòries, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the National Museum of Qatar, Nouvel’s buildings play with light, shadow, transparency, reflection, and scale. Watch as he transforms glass into a veil, turns a roof into a rain of light, or carves an entire resort into a mountain. Beneath the drama lies a rigorous attention to context, function, and the unique character of each site.Architecture expert Philip Jodidio traces the evolution of this pioneer who avowedly rejects repetition in favor of an “architecture of situation and particularity.” This updated edition of his acclaimed 2022 monograph brings Nouvel’s career into the present, with recent projects including the spectacular Sharaan Desert Resort in Saudi Arabia.Brimming with photography, drawings, and plans, this is a compelling journey through a body of work that refuses easy categorization but finds instead a distinct architectural language for every place and its particular cultural moment.
